The touch screen portion of the front glass of an iPod or iPhone is commonly called the digitizer in technical terms. The digitizer is a clear piece that is the size of the iPod LCD screen and spans the full length and width of the clear portion of the front glass. As you press on the front glass the digitizer converts analog signals generated by your fingertip into digital signals this is what produces the touch capability. The digitizer is typically fused to the front glass of such models as the iPod Touch and iPhone. Digitizers have revolutionized how people use electronics. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to scroll through documents with our fingers, use our fingers to zoom in on pictures, or tap the front of our screen and get a reaction.

Digitizers have made life easier for the great majority of people who use them in their electronics. For example, scrolling through documents used to require that you use a scroll wheel or click mouse in order to do it quickly. Nowadays people accomplish the same functionality with a flick of their fingers on the screen of the digitizer. Because a digitizer lies on top of the LCD screen, it is usually the first item to get damaged. If you bash the iPod, iTouch or whatever piece of electronics is using the digitizer too hard, you will also damage the LCD screen below it.

Digitizers can be replaced in Apple products such as the iPhone and iPod Touch (iTouch). The latest generation iPhone 2G, 3G, and 3Gs along with the iPod Touch 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation models have digitizer enabled touch features. The digitizer has also been introduced into many of the latest Smartphone’s and touch screen electronics on the market place. Touch operated devices use a digitizer to allow for touch functionality.

The Digitizers for iPhone and iPod Touch devices are very delicate. When you purchase a replacement Digitizer the front glass or outer glass will be attached. You will need to use caution when trying to replace any front glass on an iPod or iPhone. There are many repair centers available that can offer service on your front glass or digitizer for an affordable price. Repair Sharks offers full front glass repair service for iPod Touch and iPhone. If you decide to try to replace it yourself it is recommended to practice extreme care if you attempt to repair one of your iPod or iPhone units. Causing damage to the digitizer or digitizer cable on an iPhone or iPod Touch will cause your unit to stop functioning properly and you will need to replace the digitizer.

Digitizers can vary in price for the individual part. If you send it into a repair shop, the price will be slightly higher although being that you may damage other parts in the process the small repair fee might save you a great deal of anguish. If you decide to perform a digitizer replacement yourself then it is advised to speak to a professional to order the correct parts for your model as each model has different hardware.

If you are one of the many iPod users with a bad left or right audio channel or even no audio at all you are not alone. Frequent use of the iPod headphone jack can deteriorate sound quality as the jack wears down. The issue is common in iPod headphone jacks as most users plug and unplug their headphones repeatedly over the course of its life. Bending or twisting of the cable can damage the jack by exerting unnatural force on the internal contact points. Damage can also occur by excerpting force while you are plugging or unplugging the iPod. The internal mounts for the jack are plastic and excessive force can dame this area.

In some instances you may lose all audio from both channels of the iPod headphones. Two different issues can exist when this occurs. The first is that the jack is completely dead or it has become disconnected internally. The second is a more extreme damage and can also occur easily if you are not careful using your iPod. This is iPod logic board damage. The audio channels on the iPod logic board or as some call it the Mainboard can be damaged by electrical surge or shock, reverse input (putting an output cable into the headphone jack input), mismatched cables, or exists from other issues within the iPod circuitry. For personal users this issue is usually more difficult to diagnose. Professional repair centers can offer diagnostics on your iPod to determine the root cause of the audio problem.

Repairing an iPod Headphone Jack varies from one iPod generation to the next. Each generation iPod model typically has its own specific headphone jack. Some of the newer models such as the iPod Touch require soldering to the logic board. The iPod Nano headphone jacks are very tough to work with as their size is very small. Headphone jack sizes also vary between sizes of standard iPods. For instance if you have a 30GB iPod Video the headphone jack would have a smaller riser than the 60 or 80GB iPod Video models. The angle of the headphone jack also differs on some iPod Video and iPod Classic models Refer with a professional iPod repair center for the correct part and installation advice.

Repair Sharks offers headphone jack replacement on most iPod Versions. We can solder and de-solder any new battery into place in our repair shop. We also stock many iPod headphone jack versions. Contact us today for a quote on a price or part.

Inadvertent damage can occur to LCD’s of all sizes. iPod and iPhone LCD damage is no different. The iPod LCD can crack, break, have a loss of pixes, or be subjected to an area blackout of pixels. In the picture below you can see what a cracked LCD looks like. This picture is a good illustration of a few types of damage you will see on an iPod or iPhone LCD. The blotchy area is where the layers are compacted and the cracks are evident in the photo.

Repairing an LCD can be a daunting task in some models. In many cases it requires removal of hardware components once inside in order to access the iPod LCD and be able to carefully remove and replace it. It is advised to follow the manufacturer’s instructions or consult with a professional repair shop.

The first step to replacing an LCD is simple, get the LCD. Make sure you have the correct model and version to support your iPod. iPod and iPhone LCD’s vary from model to model and there are some such as the 5th Generation Video that have more than one LCD available for that model.

Next, you will want to follow the instructions for your particular model. Instructions can be found on the web and there are some particularly useful videos available on such sites as YouTube. If you are uncomfortable with this type of repair there are affordable solutions to having the iPod or iPhone LCD replaced professionally.

It is often questioned whether it makes sense to purchase a new iPod or repair an old one. We always want the latest and greatest devices to add to our arsenal of portable media weaponry. When it comes time to weigh the cost and benefit of repair over that of replacement we need to consider a few options.

Why it makes sense to repair – Repairing your iPod has a few advantages including:

Cost – usually the cheaper than buying new or even used.

Environmental Consideration – repairing is a greener solution. It is a less environmentally impacting process. Repair shops only replace what’s needed rather than throwing out the old to buy a new device.

Features – in some cases there are features available with the older iPod that aren’t available in the new. Take the 5th Generation iPod Video for example. You can have video output through the headphone jack whereas newer models like the iPod Classic are required to use a Apple Universal Dock Connector.

Sentimental Value – believe it or not a lot of people are attached to their iPods. Why replace something that has been given to you, just because it breaks, when you can keep it working for many many years.

Repair can make your iPod look like new again – A new faceplate and backplate will have you looking like new again. Let a professional replace your front and back covers and you will have a new iPod again!

Going from an iPod 4th Generation to an iPod Touch is a nice upgrade. The new features available in the Touch and Touch 2G are a big step up from the old photo generation iPods.

New generation iPods are getting more sophisticated. Additionally, they are also getting easier to break. With the addition of flash memory to many of the newer Nano, iPod Touch, and iPhone single repairs are getting pricier. There is no replacing of a bad hard drive anymore. Many of the boards have the memory in place and require full replacement of the Mainboard and memory modules. Screen replacement, a common repair, can require the replacement of multiple parts such as the digitizer and midframe.

Luckily for consumers repair options are available for almost any generation iPod.

Don’t be fooled, even though our prices are one of the most competitive you will find on the web our service is also one of the best customer focused experiences you will have with a repair facility. We have built many great relationships with our clientele and look forward to talking with anyone looking for repair advice. We offer the no “bull” experience. We are honest and straightforward with everyone we deal with and that’s not just talk. We will do our very best to keep costs down for you while not compromising quality.

To be honest sometimes we work on our customers individual iPods for a few hours to ensure they test properly under all conditions including continuous playback over long periods. iPods can be tricky devices sometimes and we like to make sure we hand back a device that will work long after it is repaired. We are not a 15 minute repair shop. Do you really want someone that handles your valuable data and precious iPod as if it was a five dollar calculator? We don’t think so and are pretty sure you don’t either.

We aren’t in the business of bashing our competition but we also like to tell it like it is. Don’t be fooled by repair shops offering “free labor.” I mean do you think anyone would be in business if they gave away all their services? Of course not, the prices of the parts include the labor charges. We choose to break down that cost for you. It helps our customers save money when they are just looking for parts or in retrospect certain cases when extensive work is needed. For example, water damaged units can sometimes have multiple issues depending on the severity. We can clean and de-oxidize the mainboards, repair certain types of damaged battery connectors, and clean dirt and debris. You would be surprised how much corrosion can happen from just a little bit of moisture inside an iPod. The de-oxidation process can be harmful to certain components if not handled correctly. We take the necessary precautions to prevent and minimize collateral damage to iPods while reconditioning them.

“Handling your iPod like it’s our own” isn’t just a statement we make, it’s what we practice and believe in.

A great business isn’t built with large volumes of mediocre service. It’s built with great service all the time.

We know that sometimes issues arise after repair and that is why with iPod Repair Guys you won’t be left hanging with your concerns. We are not a one-off repair factory we look to build our most valuable asset with every repair and parts sale, customer loyalty. That is why with repair and parts from iPod Repair Guys you are covered. Give us a try you won’t be disappointed.

The below is a breakdown of our repair process and the steps we take to ensure complete customer satisfaction.

You might have read on our website that we handle each repair as if it was our own. Well you can believe it. Our pride is in our work and every repair is handled as if it were unique. We are not an assembly line of repair techs but rather a team dedicated to one thing, your happiness. With that comes individual attention to detail whether it before, during, or after your repair experience with us.
